Why should or should not citizens of the United States be concerned about deforestation in Southeast Asia? If they should be, what would be the proper ways they might show such concern?

1 :
Citizens of the WORLD should be concerned about deforestation of any forest of the world, because shlt rolls down hill sideways and all around the ball. We should not be to concerned if properly managed, but we do not know squat anyhow and mankind will obliterate just about everything including plants, but plants will be the most prolific when man totally or just about totally obliterates itself. Face THE FACTS people, look around, you know it is almost inevitable, even with all the advances in science. The Chinese middle class is about to unfold exponentially. Imagine the strain on resources that will impose alone. and just about every country is going to be a 2 and a quarter world nation and eventually if not wiped out sooner 4th world nations.
2 :
I didn't even know that South East Asia was frozen. I think it should be defrosted as soon as possible.
3 :
Just a few figures to make you understand the problem, Lilliana: There are more people alive today than it has ever been on earth. We are now 6.7 billions and since man has existed on earth, there has not been that many. If we divide all the earth's resources; food, water, etc. per inhabitant, then we have an average individual quota. If we were all to live with e.g. a Nigerian individual quota, we could be 18 billions on earth. If we are all to live with an American quota, there could be only 1.5 billions people on earth. Scary, isn't it? Our problems for the future are global. Deforestation - anywhere - reduces the size of the rain forest, changes the climate, increases the carbon dioxide and reduce the most precious resource; drinking water. What kills more people on earth than aids or cancer, is ... water; non-potable water.

They usually complain about low paying manufacturing jobs or complain about illegal immigration stealing apple picking jobs. If you go to companies nowadays, Indians and other Asians are coming over, learning the trade, and going back to Asia...but we're more quiet about that.

June/July in asia that is NOT too hot and humid ? Pretty much nowhere i'm from hong kong and am going back and to japan around that time and it's pretty much always unbearable but that's the way it is from korea down to malaysia during summer.
2 :
I think June and July are the most humid months in Asia. Also most Asian countries have similar weather conditions .The problem will be trying to find the less humid. If you are looking for cool and dry weather(June - July),Southern africa would be best. Check here for further info(http://www.climateandweather.com/)
3 :
unfortunately, you're not really going to find any southeast asian countries that aren't too hot and humid during the months you just mentioned. if anything, those are the peak months for heat and humidity. you might want to consider two countries though that are in the general area but located more towards the south. these countries are australia and new zealand. australia will actually cold during those months since it's going to be winter then. i'm not so sure about new zealand but it might be the same since it's to the southeast of australia.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question but I just want to let you know that I've also been trying to find a way to get to China by boat; it would be fun, wouldn't it? And I hate the long flight over. So far I haven't found anything- not even cruse lines that offer to sail all the way to China. I've been trying to see if perhaps there's a charter boat in Hawaii but I'm still not finding anything. I guess it's become too old fashioned to really be profitable. Good luck on your search; I know I'll continue mine. Oh, and by the way, it probably would not be cheaper; it would take at least a week to get there from the US and so you have to add in food and housing costs. If it's all about the cost I would say go for a mid-week flight.

Myra: The centurion probably bore a diplomum, a pass which gave him priority to use any facility he required with or without payment until he took his prisoners to Rome. Before sailing the Ionian sea St Paul's ship tried to make a stop at Cnidos in Caria. Although devoid of arable land and sufficient water the rocky promontory on which Cnidus was founded enjoyed two small harbours which offered shelter to sea traffic, especially to those which arrived from the south and had to wait for the northwestern gale to stop before continuing on their way. The commercial activities that they carried out with the vessels which sailed in and out of their ports were the major income of the Cnidians. The ship carrying St Paul being unable to shelter to Cnidus because of the inclement weather and continued its way to find a better harbour.

umm. i think that is possible but youd probably die, get burned or suffocate because of all the air hitting your face at once .

No. Air resistance would make sure that you got trapped in the middle of the Earth (the oscillation would slow because of air resistance, and you'd just whoosh back and forth). However, this is a classic thought experiment; in reality, you'd be dead several times over, and it would be impossible to build such a tunnel for any number of reasons.

About 6,000 miles. At 70mph that would take about 86 Hours. I don't think there is a car made that gets that kind of milage. They would need 6 or 7 gas stations along the way.
2 :
depends on where they built it. west coast would be faster than east coast. alaska would be the fastest.
3 :
if you've ever driven in Beijing and Shanghai, you will know that Asians in general can't drive to save their life. With all the people pulling over to relieve themselves, the drive will take over a year.
4 :
One hour. Starting in Alaska you cross 60 miles over or under the Bering Strait and enter into Siberia. Indeed there are plans for a North America to Asia land bridge/tunnel There will be a road for cars but rail will be the most compelling reason.

The main thing to remember is that the most consumed beer is far from an indication of the BEST beer. It is usually an indication of what is the cheapest. Economics has no appreciation for taste! Tiger Beer in Singapore is probably the best selling beer in China but doesn't come close to Bud (the equivalent of Clydesdale Pee, in my opinion). Looking for a great beer? Try Anchor Steam from the Anchor brewing company in San Fransisco or Moretti's an Italian beer with an incredible flavor and no aftertaste. (Okay...these are my personal faves along with Pilsner Urquel from the Czeck Republic, Guinness and Negro Modelo-Mexico).

Thailand is certainly the cheapest place in Asia to get your PADI Open Water certification. The Similan Islands are one of the world's best dive destinations and you can do a liveaboard boat trip there for 4 days, including your Open Water course, for around $500 - see www.phuket-diving-safaris.com as an example of a liveaboard operator Phuket is not "tsunami-stricken" - the tsunami was nearly 2 years ago and you'll find very little evidence of it ever having happened if you come to Thailand as a tourist. Phuket tends to be one of the more expensive areas in Thailand for tourists because it's so well known - nearby islands like Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi are cheaper and much more beautiful, I think. You can do Open Water courses there too, doing daytrips over a couple of days to get your certifying dives. Check out godive-lanta.com on Lanta - they are a great bunch of guys, I've dived with them several times. As a certified scuba instructor myself, I'd advise you don't rush your time for diving - most likely once you've done the course you'll be hooked, so schedule several more days for doing fun dives once you've qualified! Have fun

At first glance, there's evidently nothing positive at all in hundreds of ppl dying in a disaster. But I suppose that every natural disaster goes long way in making ppl aware of the fact that we cant just sit here n continue burning forests n adding more CO2 to the atmosphere every which way, which is ultimately the cause of many phenomenon like drought, floods, more powerful hurricanes n typhoons, heat waves(Of course, not earthquake-caused tsunamis). I think what we can learn is that mother Nature is definitely not going to let us go without a spanking...and we better learn fast.

Why are oil reserves in Southwest Asia not distributed equally?

Why are oil reserves in Southwest Asia not distributed equally?
I understand that the distribution of oil in Southwest Asia is not equal, but I don't know WHY.
Earth Sciences & Geology - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Because it is just where they were deposited. The Persian Gulf region had the right structures to preserve oil and most of the rest of the mid-east did not
2 :
Geology doesn't follow national boundaries. The distribution of oil in southwest Asia is determined by geologic events that happened over the past 550 million years, and to some extent the past history of the Earth. Rocks that from oil reservoirs in southwest Asia range from Cambrian in age (542-448 million years before present) to Holocene (present day). To give you an example of how complex this is, Ghawar, which is the largest oil field in Saudi Arabia, and the largest in the world is contained in rock that was deposited in the Jurassic, about 200-250 million years ago. However the trap, a giant structure that created the "container" that held the oil began forming in the Carboniferous, about 320 million years ago and continued to form until the Cretaceous, about 140-70 million years before present. The oil itself came from Jurassic rock, but that oil did not form until 75 million years ago in the Cretaceous. Two other sources of petroleum exist. One is in deeper older rocks of Silurian age and one is in Cretaceous rocks. http://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/b2202-h/b2202-h-508.pdf Take a look at where the Arabian peninsula was located in the Jurassic: http://www.scotese.com/jurassic.htm Apart from the complexities of geology that have arisen from the plate tectonic patterns on our planet, there are political, cultural, and economic reasons that oil has not been discovered and explored for in some areas of southwest Asia. The history is very complex, and I would suggest you read "The Prize" by Daniel Yergin if you want to understand how the oil industry has been established in this region. The actions of colonial empires in the 19th century strongly affected how the development of oil and gas in this region proceeded. Even the boundary lines of many of the existing nations were determined in that period and in some cases were decided on the basis of oil exploration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prize:_The_Epic_Quest_for_Oil,_Money,_and_Power Aside from political and cultural boundaries, there are boundaries created by practical considerations. For example, Khazakstan could be among the top five producers of oil in the world, but it has been very difficult to build infrastructure like pipelines to move this oil to the market. Khazakstan has no seaport. Since the pipelines must cross other countries, there are difficult negotiations. Afghanistan has suffered from political instability for decades and so has not been explored. Oil was recently discovered in northern Afghanistan, but the problem of how to transport this oil to market will still be a major obstacle. Oil pipelines are expensive to build and hard to protect from anyone who wants to destroy them. If the oil reserves are not large enough to cover all of these costs, the oil will be considered stranded and left in the ground. http://www.eia.doe.gov/cabs/Kazakhstan/Background.html http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/296706

3 :
The various European powers had different interests when it came to the "Scramble for Africa" and Asian Imperialism In the case of the British, they were interested in having cheap access to various raw materials for their industrial complex (like cotton and rubber) or luxury items (like coffee beans and cocoa beans). To this end, the British used an indirect approach in which they would appoint "chiefs" to control a certain area within their claim - they aimed for a "divide and conquer" to keep the native populations from uniting and allowing the British to exploit the resources. The French (and to a lesser extent the Portugese), however, were also interested in converting and "civilizing" the Africans. To this end, they sponsored missionaries to come to their lands in order to bring Christianity to the population (sometimes with little regard for the traditions deep-rooted in many communities) or created a system of requirements that Africans needed to follow to become a "citizen" (which bascially kept citizenship out of their reach). The major expection was the French colony of Algeria, which had a large number of settlers from France, the pied nior, which displace the native Algerians. In the case of countries like Germany, Italy, and Belgium, who for the most part entered late into the Age of Imperialism, the acquisition of colonies (and spheres of influence) was a way for these recently established countries to gain prestege against countries like Britain and France, which had large swaths of African territory under their claim. A specific example of this would be the Belgium Congo; Leopold the II spent many resources and the services of Stanley to claim the large Central African territory for himself in order to gain prestige and access to resources for the tiny country of Belgium. However, in Asia, the European powers were far more interested in economic access and raw materials (since unlike Africa, the Europeans knew of cultures like the Chinese...therefore conversion or "civilizing" Asians was not the primary focus). These powers took advantage of a relatively weak Qing Dynasty and established large spheres of influence in China (for access to ports and commodities). Meanwhile, other locations like India, the East Indies, and Indochina were taken by the various powers, mostly before the second wave of imperialism. Other players in Asia included the United States (after the Spanish-American War with the acquisition of the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii) and Russia (for materials and a warm-water port). Finally, the Japanese were also taking colonies for their quickly industrializing economy, taking Formosa and eventually Korea for their needs. Kind of a long answer, but it should give you the complexity of the "New Imperialism"

Destination: Indonesia would do. It's a big country with fabulous sights worthy of a visit. If you want to save money, don't stay in Jakarta or Bali. These are places where you can have a great holiday on a budget: -Lombok (island east of Bali that's more tranquil and just as beautiful. ask around for guided tours to historical temples and ruins of ancient kingdoms, watch traditional "sendratari"'s [dance drama musical] and eat local food) -Tana Toraja (a tribe in Southern Sulawesi with very unique mystical culture... search on internet to find out more). Not very far from the Toraja area live another tribe called the Bugis, a tribe historically famous for being far-travelling pirates. Apparently the English word "bogeyman" was derived from the name of this tribe. -Ambon (Moluccan Islands, historically aka spice islands... Ambon has the most beautiful crystal-clear sea and is a popular destination for scuba divers) -Yogyakarta (South-central Java, a province in the form of a kingdom. Visit the Sultan's palace and museums that talk about the royal family's history. Hike up to Borobudur and Prambanan, one of the world's biggest Buddhist and Hindu temples. Catching a live Sendratari Ramayana at the open air Prambanan theater is a must. Eat street food: must try gudeg. Ride "becak" [pedicab] or "andong" [horse carriage] down the streets of Malioboro and bargain with souvenir peddlers there) -Padang/Minang (province in Western Sumatera famous for being adherent Muslims but having a female-dominated culture--their surnames are maternal! must see their beautiful architecture, watch their dynamic traditional dances, and try the famous Padang cuisine) Stay: In Lombok you may be able to get away with a local "melati" hotel (non-star) but in other places I recommend sticking to a budget world-known chain such as Quality Inn or Ibis. Safety: Wear an old baseball cap, sunglasses, and light long-sleeved shirts so people don't immediately notice that you are a foreigner. Wear flip-flops and clothes that aren't expensive, avoid wearing jewellery and carrying thick wallets with money popping out of them. Don't answer your mobile phone when you're caught in a traffic jam or walking in the street--set it on silent and pretend you don't have it. I always abide by these rules in Indonesia and I've never had a problem. Cheap flights: try Gulf Air, China Air, or Garuda Indonesia. Once you get to Indonesia there will be many cheap regional flights like Lion Air--you can travel Jakarta-Yogyakarta (1 hr flight) for about the equivalent of $25-30 retour. Check www.wikipedia.org for a complete list of regional Indonesian airlines. Budget: hotel not included, set Rp150.000-Rp200.000 per day (Indonesian Rupiah, IDR) Approximately Rp10.000 (ten thousand) to US$1. Check http://www.xe.com for current exchange rates.

Where can u fly the cheapest? well.. ur question is a bit ambiguous. I guess you are the backpacker. If you are asking, how can you get around asia with the cheapest plan.. then you should check tiger airways, valuair operated by jet star asia and silk air. Stay cheap and safe, my advice is to fly to ur destination and arrive early in the morning. So you have time to check available hotel in the destination. How far ur money goes.... in singapore, one bottle of water 0.5L is SGD0.6, rice with chicken $2-$5

There were more than five years worth of battles. How about Dunkirk, Stalingrad, The Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Bulge, the assault on Monte Casino, any of the landings such as D-Day or the landing at Anzio. As for the Pacific Theater, try Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Truk, Guadalcanal, Tinian, Okinawa, The Coral Sea, Midway. Those are all major battles. I guess to a soldier or sailor, the only minor battles were ones you weren't in.

How do you work in Asia where there is a low cost of living?

How do you work in Asia where there is a low cost of living (IE Philippines) and have a high paying job?
I'm thinking international wage, like having a US Salary (even 20 thousand a year could get me by for a couple of years in asia). Because when I go there everyone is either really poor, or someone has a big house. How?
Philippines - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

Working for the government is one way. The United States has government jobs and like you said you could live like a king.
2 :
if you're a native english speaker, try getting a teaching job in Thailand. The salary is good and the cost of living is low.
3 :
I live in the Philippines and have been retired and living with my wife here since 2002. Jobs like that are extreamy rare and usually in the high cost big cities like Manilla or Cebu working for a big coorporation. There are a few foreigners living here. Most are retired and on a pension like myself. Most foreigners that are not retired are working in Saudi and the UAE. There is a handfull teaching English and tutoring, but it only pays around $500 a month. People that own the big houses here are retirees like myself or OFW's.
4 :
Business ownership, entrepruneurship is the best way. Set up a business or franchise and operate your own businesses.
5 :
In the Philippines you can earn the equivalent of USD20thousand a year or higher if you were a corporate executive (VP and above), an IT professional with rare in-demand skills (like SAP), a businessman, or a corrupt government official, or if you're a real good salesman go into real estate or insurance selling. Many big houses in the Philippines are funded by overseas Filipino workers.
6 :
The very rich local families live in big, expensive houses (what we call Class AB houses like those in Dasma, Forbes, and Alabang). Only 1% of total homes in the Philippines falls in this category. Some expats and foreign dignitaries / ambassadors get to live in these homes, paid for by their companies or their governments. Foreign retirees and some "upper-middle class" locals live in decent, but not big Class A houses because they can't afford the Class AB homes, nor the maintenance costs for a really big and expensive house. But these would be pretty comfortable and presentable homes. These are called "Upper C" homes. Other dwellings would include the low-cost single detached homes or apartments. These would be for "Class Lower C" types. Finally, those who live in structures obviously needing repair, or made of light materials without a decent coat of paint, or those in shanties - - these are the "D" and "E" type of homes. If you earn US$20,000 a year, and assumning that that will be net after tax, your monthly budget will be around Pesos 75,000.00. If you assume that 1/3 of that will be for rent and electricity and water, then that means all you can rent will be something for P25,000 including water and electricity. That means rent will be around P20,000.00 per month, leaving P5,000 for the utilities. You can rent a 30 square meter studio unit in Makati for that budget. Or a house in Cebu or Iloilo where rent is cheaper. Yes, for someone living alone, that will be quite sufficient.

Thailand. Look up info in Krabi area. Just an idea
2 :
My personal preference would be: 1) Thailand 2) Philippines 3) Malaysia In that order It's not so much that Thailand has the best environment for DMs, but that compared to other SE Asian countries it is one of the better developed dive industries. You also have the option of diving West or East Coasts in Thailand, depending on the monsoon season. You also have a steady stream of tourists to keep the pipeline going. Malaysia is not as famous for their sites (and its a bit more expensive than Thailand). In my opinion getting to dive sites in the Philippines can be difficult because you have to either ferry or fly from island to island. This limits your clientele base. Japan and NZ are fantastic, but you might find the limited income of a DM to be tough going in those two countries. Your money will go further in Thailand. Shoot me a personal e-mail at gy_chiu at yahoo if you consider Thailand. I can recommend a contact who might be able to give you the info on a few dive operators.
3 :
A foreigner needs an employment "Z" visa to work in any Asian country. You must be sponsored for the visa by your employer and meet government mandated criteria. Find out about the income tax rules in advance. Some countries will have significantly steeper tax rates than you are used to. Also find out rules regarding re-patriation of assets to your home country. This isn't a problem from developed countries, like Japan and Australia, but is legally prohibited from many developing nations (Philippines, Vietnam, etc.) Good luck.

More like Japan tried to take over Asian countries themselves and had to be nuked by the US to stop. Open a history textbook please.
2 :
Its quite likely. It shocked the western world when the Japanese defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese war. I wish there was as decisive a battle that stopped them from conquering the Americas. Hello: 50 million people isn't a blank canvas. No real cities? What do you call Tenochtitlan? A city of 200,000, with temples, marketplaces, aquaducts, zoos, schools, garbagemen, ball game courts, and aquariums? Thats not a real city to you? The Mississippi Mound civilization? The Iroquios Confederacy, whose constitution the US constitution is based on? Learn history.
3 :
No. The process of colonisation in the Americas and Australia was because they were effectively empty except for primitive civilisation. Asian countries, even the ones conquered/subjugated, had cities (real cities, not a small village in the mountains) armies, governments etc. The Americas were effectively a blank canvas with some easily defeated and un-unified people there. Obviously now what Europeans did during that time is frowned upon but the sad and simple truth is if they hadn't democracy, human rights, electricity, railway etc, would not have spread and most of the world would be under the rule of kings and churches, dieing at the age of 20 from TB.
4 :
No, the most powerful nations at the time, the British Empire and the French Empire; had no interest in settling or colonising East Asia. China, for instance, was too big to control and had no significant products to control and sell, save for coal. That is why European powers built outposts throughout China after the Opium wars: Opium and coal. Russia did have some interest for warm water ports in Korea and Manchuria, but that was only for its trade and navy.
5 :
LOL. Is that what the are teaching in the Japanese history books?

Can a Singapore driving license use in Thailand and the Asia region and vice-versa?
Is a Singapore driving license valid for use in Thailand and the Asia region and vice-versa?
Thailand - 4 Answers

1 :
You need to go to AA(Automobile Association. River Valley Road) and apply an International Driving Licence first.
2 :
Most Asian countries including Thailand and Singapore accept an International Drivers Permit which is used in conjunction with a valid license from your home country, China is one major exception. Here in Thailand you most likely could get by with your Singapore drivers license if pulled over for a ticket, but if you get in an accident, you better have an International Drivers Permit with you. They're easy enough to get, are cheap and don't require any tests, just a valid drivers license is all you need. Reputable car rental companies may also require that you have one. You can get one at an AA office in Singapore. http://www.drivers.com/article/937/
3 :
In singapore you can apply for a "Smart card" an international drivers license intended fo international license in asien countries only. I have one so I can go from Thailand to Laos. The smart card takes the place of my Thai drivers license. I am sure Singapore will be the same.
4 :
people always say you need an international drivers license, but i think thats all nonsense. i drive in Thailand all the time with nothing more than my California drivers license. i have been stopped by police 6 different times and not once have they ever asked me for any form of identification. not a drivers license, not a passport .... nothing. they tell me i was speeding and to give them 200 or 300 baht ($7-$10) ..... and im on my way. wish my tickets in the US were that cheap !!!!!!

This is a little confusing?? Are you in Tokyo now? I think it is best to look at a map, see which stops interest you the most and then get the pricing from an airline and see what you can afford.
2 :
From Tokyo? I'm not sure. But once you're on the main continent it depends on how much time you have to travel. There are often cheap flights on Tiger Airways, or the price of buses can be good too. I've had bad experiences on trains though, especially in Vietnam. As to a route, again that depends on time. You could go to Vietnam, then Laos, cross over into Northern Thailand and work your way south to Bangkok. Or start in Northern Vietnam, travel south, and cross over into Cambodia, and then Thailand. It's really up to you and want you want to see.
3 :
cheapest ways is travel by Air Asia, check their offers, you can buy all tickets for very cheap price.

That budget sounds reasonable to me but it would be worth being specific about the countries you are visiting. For instance, $15-20 is plenty for a budget traveller in Laos while you'd probably want $25-30 per day in Thailand and more in Singapore. It also depends on the level of comfort you require but it sounds like you are looking for a cheap holiday rather than a first class one. The Lonely Planet website has suggested daily budgets for most countries of the world and I'd recommend taking a look at what they have to say. I've always found their guidelines bang-on when I've gone travelling and at least it gives you a starting point. Personally, I'd probably budget $40 per day knowing that some days will cost more and most will cost less. This would leave me with a buffer in case I found something amazing I wanted to do or I got unexpectedly stranded for a few extra days. I hope this helps. Have a fantastic trip!
