How dependent is Asia's economy on the United States?

How dependent is Asia's economy on the United States?
With the recent troubles of the US economy and the sinking value of the dollar, how will this affect Asia? Is Asia dependent on the United States economy? If the dollar drops in value what does that do to the currencies of Asia? I have relatives in the Philippines and it sort of worries me.
Economics - 4 Answers

1 :
It's a good thing for Asia. Because the dollar drops, that means the value of other currencies becomes stronger which makes the exchange advantageous for other countries other than US. It also means the Asian countries will be able to purchase more from the US because its value has gone down and they do not have to spend as much in order to buy the same thing.
2 :
Asia is sort of dependent on U.S. economy. I'm pretty sure the U.S. invests in foreign countries, and U.S. companies hire workers in Asia. The sinking value will not affect much, and a sinking dollar value is not exactly trouble. Some economists view budget deficits as a sign of strong economy because its citizens are able to afford more consumable goods. Exchange rates will be more favorable, though it doesn't matter much. The dollar isn't dropping that fast, so there's not much to worry about.
3 :
As far as China goes.... 21% https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ch.html Scroll down to Economy.. then Export partners. If the US goes downhill, we will buy less consumer goods... which means a downturn for China. But I dont think that will happen on a huge scale.
4 :
"With the recent troubles of the US economy and the sinking value of the dollar, how will this affect Asia?" The sinking dollar will be good for Asian currencies. How much will it affect their lifestyles? Not much. Asians in general are pretty self-sustaining people both environmentally and economically. I would think that even if the US economy collapsed, Asians would still be okay, for the most part. Asian investors in the American economy and financial markets would be devestated, but they make up only a small part of the population. "Is Asia dependent on the United States economy?" It depends where. The Phillipines for example, wouldn't be affected much as compared to Saudi Arabia, which relies heavily on its oil exports. You will find that the United States is more dependent on Asia than Asia is on the US. If the US economy collapsed (not just receeded), which it will most likely do in the next 3-5 years, most of the world will be affected. The only places that would survive is places that sustain their own economy. Places where most of the jobs are domestic.

How is the original form of Buddhism from India different from that of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia?

How is the original form of Buddhism from India different from that of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia?
I need this for an assignment and I can't really figure out how they are different. Just that Sri Lanka and most of Southeast Asia practice Theravada Buddhism. But I don't really understnad the difference from the original form of Buddhism.

1 :
the original Buddhism is in nepal, srilaka, india and south east asian countries. Buddha himself is Nepalese not indian but he went to study a lot of magic stuffs with the wizards and hermits in india and then he enlighted in india but his religion doesn't famous in india because indian ppl like the religion that have a magnificent ritual for example, the Hindus and Brahman. - most of the nepalese, srilakan and south east asian like thai practice both Hindus and Buddism. they believe that hindus and buddism is the same religion. take a look at thailand for instance? the monk build the biggest Genesha ( one of Hindus god) statue in the world nearby a river in thailand. I caucasian and was born in thailand, I'm Buddist... as I know Theravada is the oldest sect of Buddism. the monk can't touch the women but Mahayana sect, the monks can toch women.
2 :
Well, we don't really know what exactly 'the original form' of Buddhism was. The Theravada school claims to be the closest, but other traditions would not necessarily agree with that. Theravada was one of many slightly different traditions that appeared after the Buddha passed away - not unlike what happened in Christianity. This happens simply because one can always interpret teachings somewhat differently. When the Buddha's teachings were first written down in the 'Pali canon', this became a bit like the bible for the Theravada Buddhists. We will probably never know which teachings of the Buddha were simply forgotten or wrongly memorized when writing don this canon hundreds of years after the passing away of the Buddha. Again, comparing this to Christianity, also the Bible was compiled hundreds of years after Jesus passed away, and even if all the original texts were copied and translated correctly, what about the experience and memories of other disciples?

How long do I have to wait for Yes-Asia to verify my credit card?
It's the end of the second day, I hope they get back to me soon. Has anyone else experienced this before? They sent me an e-mail saying: To ensure that you are the rightful cardholder and to protect you from any unauthorized use of your credit card, kindly provide us with one of the following information at your earliest convenience: 1. A copy of the front and back image of your credit card. (Please black-out the signature area for your own protection); OR 2. A copy of your most recent credit card statement, which must clearly show the credit card number, the cardholder name and the billing address. It had other things in it, like saying that it's on hold and stuff. I trust Yes-Asia. But, I just don't want to be ripped off 185 dollars. I've already e-mailed them back, I did option A. 8D Nevermind guys! It just got approved~ Thanks for your support <3 Have a great day~

I've made purchases at Yes-Asia but wasn't subject to the requirement you mentioned. I don't see the need for them to do so. All that they need is to check with the credit card issuance company to confirm that you're the rightful owner. Alternatively, you could connect with your credit card company and let them know of your purchased and advise them to 'approve' the purchased. Yes-Asia will then be notified by the credit card to proceed with the purchase..

What kind of permanent jobs can a person without a university degree get in South East Asia?

What kind of permanent jobs can a person without a university degree get in South East Asia?
I want to move to somewhere in South East Asia, it's not important where but I don't have a university degree. Are there any permanent type jobs a person could get there, besides teaching English? Is it possible to get a job at a hostel, hotel or somewhere in the the tourism sector?
Thailand - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You don't have any experience or education so what makes you think you will get a job in Thailand in the hotel or tourism sector. Why would a hotel hire you as a bell boy, you have no skill in hotel management. Not sure why you asked in the Thai Travel Section only but any company would hire a Thai over some uneducated foreigner. Unless you can find a foreign company, who will hire you and sent you to Thailand your SOL.
2 :
Well you didn't outline your experience, but there are opportunities in south east asia but they are few and far between and most require that you go there. For example, a back packer hostel might look for someone to work there, as do top hotels and resorts throughout asia. However this work is rarely legal. You could also get an English teaching certificate and with the help of photoshop, a fake university diploma...and teach English. Real jobs are usually for people with the appropriate experience and qualifications. Other people have supported themselves in south east asia engaging in range of different activities. For example often people obtain a business visa and work several part-time jobs. If you have experience or qualificaiton in something tourism related (eg SCUBA teacher) then it is easy to work in a resort teaching people how to SCUBA dive. Other opportunities include business, especially if you have contacts back home you can spend you time in south east asia sourcing cheap products for small businesses back home. The truth is more people than ever before are travelling around the world, which means it is harder than ever before.
3 :
I can't speak for the rest of SE Asia but in Thailand a hotel, hostel or any other type business will hire a Thai person over a foreigner, they don't have to pay them much, no special paperwork for a work visa, no language barrier. If you don't have a special skill to make you hire-able I'm sorry to burst your dream bubble but in Thailand you have two chances of getting hired; slim and none.
4 :
Service jobs are prohibited to foreigners so you cannot work legally in nearly every type of job that you could get without a degree. Even the requirements for English teachers are more strict now so you won't be able to work legally in that either. And the risk of working illegally is a stay at the immigration detention center which is hell on earth from all accounts.
5 :
Owen it's not easy but your only option would be to make a living on line, if you can survive on your income at home Thailand or SEA as a whole will be no problem. Many farangs do this, although the Thai authorities frown upon it they have little or no way of checking. You would have to keep hopping borders to keep your visas current but that is easy enough. Just come up with a way to work online to provide a living income, not easy is it.
6 :
I know where you can get a job in a few months harvesting rice for 180 baht a day. You don't need a university degree for that.

South Korea or Japan. Rich cultures and economic strength without any of the sociopolitical mess in China. Though in light of the recent earthquake, Korea might be a better choice for the moment.

thailand. people are nice, food is good. philippines, people are relatively nice, food ok japan, people are relatively nice, food great korea, people difficult, food challenging china, people nice, food good. vietnam, people relatively nice, food good.

Depends on your home country. Philippines is good if from U.S. But if you mean exchange student don't expect them to speak good english even at college level. Its the official language for government, but they don't do it very good. Just watch your wallet at all times and remember the taxis will always try to charge you X10 the real fare. Don't wear jewelry. Otherwise the cost of living is low, especially on Mindanao. Don't go to Manila. Its a crappy place. Pollution, traffic congestion, poverty and crime. I'd suggest Davao City, Cagayan de Oro or Dipolog. Nice places with reasonable cost of living.
4 :
Try Indonesia especially the very famous Bali Island where most celebrities choose to visit. They are best in accommodation services especially with villas.

What effect did the colonization of America have on Asia?

What effect did the colonization of America have on Asia?
I'm writing an essay about how the colonization of the americas had an impact on the rest of the world. Europe, and Africa are easy, but im really not sure what the colonization did to Asia at all. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!
History - 1 Answers

It would be fair to say that the initial colonisation of the Americas had very little effect on Asia compared to the partial colonisation of Asia itself. The big overall change was increasing prosperity as trade increased, but this brought with it increased competition and sometimes conflict. Traders often established fortified trading posts that could grow into colonies. The colonisation of the Americas was part of this matrix of increasing trade, as the prevailing winds of the Pacific became trade routes. Parts of Asia contributed colonists that settled in the Americas. Even today, more than a few of Latin America's prominent families, including ruling classes have origins in places like Syria and Lebanon, where many fled local political and religious strife. In more recent times many immigrants from East and South Asia have made their homes in the Americas. Thus America has served as a land of opportunity for many Asians.

What forces contributed to the spread of fighting in world war 1 from europe to asia and afria?
History - 3 Answers

1 :
The main force was Imperialism. The major powers of the world has colonies all over the world. As such, not only were the main powers fighting each other in Europe, but they were fighting each other on the colonies. Naval warfare was also a major contribution as U-Boats (German submarines) were used to hamper Allied shipping all over the world.
2 :
I believe the answer if this is a homework question would be: "Entangling alliances" Each country had signed numerous agreements to make war on offending nations that attack it's allies. The above answer is also a good one.
3 :
World War I was a global military conflict which involved the majority of the world's great powers, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Entente Powers and the Central Powers. over 70 million military personnel were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. in a state of total war, the major combatants fully placed their scientific and industrial capabilities at the service of the war effort. over 15 million people were killed, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. the proximate cause for the war was the June 28, 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary's resulting demands against the Kingdom of Serbia led to the activation of a series of alliances which within weeks saw all of the major European powers at war. as a consequence of the global empires of many European nations, the war soon spread worldwide. by the war's end, four major imperial powers—Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire—had been militarily and politically defeated, with the latter two ceasing to exist as autonomous countries. the revolutionized Soviet Union emerged from the Russian Empire, while the map of central Europe was completely redrawn into numerous smaller states. the League of Nations was formed in the hope of preventing another such conflict. the European nationalism spawned by the war, the repercussions of Germany's defeat, and the Treaty of Versailles would eventually lead to the beginning of World War II in 1939.

How come Christian nations don't get a lot of Natural disasters like those in Asia?

How come Christian nations don't get a lot of Natural disasters like those in Asia?
I think it's time atheists tremble at the might of the Lord and repent. Because Christian nations just don't get a lot of natural disasters that are devastating like Asia. Christian nations dont keep warring with themselves like the middle east and africa. So how come?
Religion & Spirituality - 38 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
God keeps missing.
2 :
The only Christian nation I can think of is the Vatican. So what else are you talking about?
3 :
Ummmm...Hurrican Katrina, massive forest fires, rampant flooding don't qualify? You're being ridiculous.
4 :
because we serve a mighty God who loves His children and protects them. amen!
5 :
Because no "christian" nation exists.
6 :
Katrina and Gustav slipped through while God was watching the infidels blow each other up, I guess.
7 :
You aren't paying very close attention.
8 :
Oh my.
9 :
Cough Katrina Cough
10 :
As a Christian, I'm not so convinced this is a solid argument as you are making it out to be. "The Lord causes it to rain on the just and the unjust." Sorry, dude.
11 :
We are blessed.
12 :
Like Katrina? "Christian nations dont keep warring with themselves like the middle east and africa." Like the current US engagement in Iraq? Or do you mean like Vietnam, Panama, Guam?
13 :
utter rubbish, even for you.
14 :
Do you mean like Hurricane Katrina? Massive earthquakes in California? Wildfires in California? Flooding all over the USA?, or are we not a Christian nation? I know many will say no. Some will say yes. What nations do you mean?
15 :
Not keeping up with the news, huh? Or do you not consider wildfires in California to be a natural disaster? Perhaps you're wise enough to understand that the U.S. is not a Christian nation. Either way, natural disasters occur everywhere. No nation is immune, Christian or otherwise. Particularly ironic: within the last few days California had a devastating wildfire on Angel Island.
16 :
Feeling a tad ethnocentric? Moron!
17 :
Hmmm...try telling that to the millions of people who were effected by Hurricane Ike last month. You do not get the Weather Channel on cable?
18 :
Is there a Christian nation besides Vatican City?
19 :
You obviously haven't been to North America. Earthquakes, Hurricanes etc.
20 :
I don't know of any Christian nations, so your argument is meaningless.
21 :
I think murder is a natural disaster...and we have plenty of that. The only reason so many people die in those countries is because of an increased poor population without access to news/transportation in time. I don't think America isn't exactly a Christian nation anyway. Only Christians would say that.
22 :
and what pray tell was Katrina? or for that matter the numerous earthquakes in California over the last century or so. or the tornados that devastate the middle of the USA... or the floods that regularly occur in the Mississipi basin. Christian Nations don't war amongst themselves, eh? What about WWII? Your premise is fundamentally flawed perhaps?
23 :
UK is mostly atheist and I haven't heard about a natural disaster there in like... um... ever. You might want to re-work this theory of yours.
24 :
Yes because christian nations like america would never have a levee break and then send poo water, dead bodies, and toxins through a city. Or we would never have a huge earthquake in a city with a large red bridge. Or we would never have a large percentage of our population wipped out by war in babylon. Or chistian nation would never have air born virus, or bird virus epidemic. No us christian are so safe we sould stop praying.
25 :
Have you NO education?
26 :
You obviously weren't watching the news when Hurricane Katrina struck. Nor when Christian nations went to war recently: Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Iraq...
27 :
They're too busy making war on other nations, such as Afghanistan and Iraq. And did we forget Katrina? What about the forest fires and mudslides every year in LA? Mid west flooding every year? Earthquakes? Terrorist attacks? The idea that God goes around punishing people who don't follow him left and right isn't even a Christian idea. Christians believe God waits for Judgement Day!
28 :
Does being a Christian give you a subjective memory? I seem to recall a Hurricane or two that took out New Orleans, massive wildfires burning California to a crisp, Water shortages in Georgia, but I could be mistaken. God Loves America, doesn't he?
29 :
Who in the hell worries about NATURAL disasters right now! Open a newspaper, or watch the news! We are in a financial disaster right now, the likes of which this country has not seen, since the Great Depression! People are committing suicide, and taking their families with them!! Wake up!! As for war? Bush is warring on Iraq at the moment, or did that escape your notice, too????
30 :
Ha ha ha. I will see if I can find you a clue.
31 :
I assume you mean natural disasters like hurricanes Katrina and Ike and Gustav and Hannah, and like the tornadoes that devastate much of the United States every year, and like the earthquakes in California ... those kinds of natural disasters that Christian nations like the good old US of A don't get. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you were joking. .
32 :
We have a number of natural disasters so I don't get your view of us not having a lot of natural disasters as the Asian nations.
33 :
I hope your faith in God is strong, for our country is about to be changed and God is just trying to get our attention now, but worse is on it's way, for you don't seem to realize that we live in the belly of the Beast prophesied about in the book of Revelation. To God, all world governments are evil, as is all the false prophets throughout the world. The only true church and peoples of God are those who have overcome the world of man and follow God and not men. Revelation 3; 12. Gods people shall be called the New Jerusalem, which none but those who are taught by God, through his son, Jesus Christ. Gods true church is within us who need no man-made laws to know right from wrong. The more laws made to control, the further from God we are. All churches are abominations to God. Gods spirit only enters temples of flesh, not stone. A true follower of God needs no church to know how to live amongest his fellow beings. Think about it.
34 :
Regarding your Question and the comments (Answers). GOD is LOVE...Jesus came to correct our understanding of his Father...Their is no death or punishments made by GOD...And we are all created by him...He loves us, and he gave us the body to handle the soul...So both are perfect... But we did not protect them, and we fall in thins... Saint Paul was sent by Jesus to spread the word of GOD in the entire world...The message was never for the people of GOD only...We are all equal and what GOD knows we will never reach... GOD BLESSES YOU ALL + + +
35 :
1) Why are you directing this at atheists? The areas that are devastated by natural disasters are not atheist nations. Your logic is non-existent, a little like your God. 2) There are no Christian nations, either. 3) I feel the need to point out that your God is being used as an excuse to fight the biggest war in the Middle East at the moment. 4) I will never be worshipping a God who deliberately destroys lives with natural disasters. Good day to you.
36 :
It could be a geographical thing. Careful now. You saw what happened with Katrina, and Rita. Not to mention Ike.
37 :
Even though atheists are spreading across our culture like a cancer, we still have a covenant with the Lord that protects those of us who still respect and love the Lord.
38 :
Dude, my area gets hit every year by a killer tornado, and I live in the Bible Belt USA. Watch the news, read a newspaper or something. I am a strong believer in God, but that does not exempt me from natural disaster. It just means that when I get hit it was my turn to struggle and strengthen my faith.

What is it like flying transatlantic or pacific like from the Americas to Europe or Asia?
I've never flown to Europe or Asia and does it feel any different than flying over land? Can you see the ocean if you look down from the window? Do you get a different feeling when you approach London, Paris, or Tokyo?

I've flown back and forth from the U.S. to Asia way too many times. It sucks. The flight's long, and it's just grey/blue outside. It's much more interesting to fly over land.
2 :
The ocean part is boring! I've been to Europe once (Athens), and I thought it was really cool flying over the continent... But it's mostly a matter of just because it's a new and exotic place, if you understand what I mean.
3 :
You do get to see the ocean but at 35000 feet there isn't much too see. Usually relief at landing not from a safety point of view but plans get stuffy. There is also the anticipation of a destination on a bigger trip.
4 :
Horrible, they beat you and touch your no no spots
5 :
The other answers have (mostly) good information. You can't see much from 35,000+ feet and anyway most of a trans-Atlantic eastbound flight is at night. Flying acroos the Pacific you see a lot of water below, unless it's cloudy - then you see the tops of the clouds. Some advie on jet lag: More than about 6 hours in an airplane is really tough and the result is usually called "jet lag". The time change is part of "jet lag", but only part. For example, people experience jet lag when traveling from North America to South America even when they don't change time zones. Dehydration caused by dry air in the cabin is as important as the time change, and dehydration can be cumulative + aggravated by your environment/activities before the flight. Jet lag can be much worse on the return leg of a relatively short trip because you never really recovered from the lag incurred on the first leg. It can also be aggravated by what you do between trips. I have not found anything that eliminates jet lag, but staying hydrated helps reduce it. Water and non-carbonated liquids are best. Avoid drinking alcohol or a lot of anything with caffeine, including colas. Wear clothing that is comfortable. Especially avoid tight clothing or shoes - your body will swell during a long flight. Sleeping on the flight (even if it isn't very good sleep) also helps. A sleep mask (like www.mindfold.com) and earplugs may help you sleep. You can choose to take something to help you sleep on the plane, but try it first. Many sleep aids can make you groggy long after you need to wake up. I just use aspirin. Get up and walk around every few hours. Do some stretching exercises - there is usually room by the exterior doors. Most airlines really try to provide good in-flight entertainment on long distance flights. The airline’s website may list the films & music available and may even give the menu. However, you can’t absolutely count on the in-flight entertainment. Bring one or more books that you have started and know you like. It is really annoying to open a new book on a flight and realize you don't find it interesting. Things like an I-Pod, Gameboy or PSP, MP3 player, and non-electronic options like crossword puzzles are a good idea. If you have a long layover during the trip, check with the airline(s) to see if you can purchase ($25 to $50) a 1-day pass to their airport lounge. Lounges offer a comfortable, safe place to wait between flights and refreshments are included in the membership. Some lounges even have showers (a Godsend after a long flight). Delta's Crown Room and United's Red Carpet Club are examples. You will be wasted when you get to your destination so don't schedule anything important the day you get there. At least try to avoid driving a car - take taxis. Speed your body's adjustment to local time by living on the local schedule: Stay awake until local bedtime at your destination and stay in bed until local morning. If you absolutely must take a nap make sure you don't sleep more than 3 hours. Eat meals at the normal local time. And so on. It still takes me 1 day per hour of time change to fully adjust (a 7 hour time difference takes me a full week to get over).

Hi I flew many times transatlantic or not and have to say that once going from Switzerland to India, I made a strange experience... the captian told us that the light we can see from the plane are from Irak and I had to say that imagining that some people there might be in war and suffering or dying really touch me... it was a very strange feeling.. usually you see such things at the TV everyday but when you are near and able to see some lights from the country... this is very different...
7 :
Very long trip. You can see the ocean in you sit by the window as long as it's not cloudy. Some airlines have cameras installed in front of the plane and bellow, so you can see everything without a window - live, as you are watching the TV set in front of you. The feeling is different, when I've seen US city for the first time, I was really surprised, the buildings are in straight lines, while Europe is like Tijuana hills almost....all packed..

How will the american economic slowdown, with the worsening housing market, effect property markets in Asia?
I own property in Cambodia in Southeast Asia, where the housing market is presently very good, with property values increasing by almost 40% per annually. I am concerned that the US economic slump with its numerous housing forclosures, will eventually effect the housing market in Cambodia as well. I want to know what to expect - will the US economic crisis effect Cambodia or not? The Cambodian currency is tied closely to the US dollar. With the dollars recent fall on world money markets how will this effect the Cambodian market?

Not many people would agree with me... but... I think Cambodia is the next Roman Empire. It will rule the world within a few months... November at the latest. That should bode well for Cambodia housing, particularly multi-family units with swimming pools. But that's just my opinion.
2 :
I think it's going to affect expensive places like Japan and Hong Kong a lot more. For the long term, I think Cambodia will be okay. The dollar will eventually go back up. The Euro is way too strong and all of the countries in the EU know a strong Euro is bad for the EU. Good luck.

Do you have any education or background in operating a business? It is a lot more complicated than you imagine. Many companies offer on line degrees in business administration. I suggest you do a bit more research before committing yourself to such an endeavor. However, you see little family owned Asian Markets everywhere and they seem to be thriving. A market certainly exists.

I think of a strange juxtaposition of technological advancement and poverty... Of the greatest beauty of nature apposed to the overpopulation and crowding of the neon cities... I think of intellectual freedom and personal restraint and repression. I guess it also depends on what part of Asia you are talking about... Poverty, communism, and oppression in China... Freedom, advancement, and beauty in Japan... The overflowing sex tourism trade in Thailand... You are talking about a HUGE chunk of the planet... Each part is totally distinct of the others...

Someday, I'll go visit where I came from, with my sister. *sighs*

Chemical engineers will always be in demand because they are so essential in so many different industries. Chemical engineers are used in pharmaceutical, water, food and oil and gas industries to name a few. It depends here you get a job as to what the job scope is, I work in an office and do calculations and datasheets and occasionally go to site to see what I have designed and to commission it, whereas others work on a plant all day. As for salaries look at the attached links.

How did Europe come to be defined as a distinct entity, apart from, say, Asia or Africa?
The Creation of the West: Consider the formation of the geographical and ideological boundaries of Western Civilization. How did Europe come to be defined as a distinct entity, apart from, say, Asia or Africa? Consider both the political consolidation of Europe from ancient times through the Medieval period, and the ideological (and religious) constitution of European identity from the classical period through the Renaissance. To what extent was the idea of the West founded on an internal heritage, and to what extent did it depend upon the presence of populations defined as fundamentally alien?

Europe lies West of the Urals in the Russian landscape, separating the Ukraine from the Eastern part of Russia. 1 :
The industrial revolution had started.
2 :
The 19th Century is known as a time of great industrial expansion for Europe. It was particularly cut-throat,too. Britain led the movement, and other countries soon followed, trying to gain industrial strenth. This was all leading up inevitably to a war--the Great War, or WWI. These attempts to gain natural resources became especially competitive between European countries, so this competition drove it. The movement is known as the "scramble for Africa," and later the "scramble to Asia." Europeans simply divided up Africa, for the first time they were moving into the interior of the African continent. Whereas the times before, control of Africa had been limited to ports around the east and west. I think the idea of Nationalism was a key motive for this move to gain natural resources, Governments promoted patriotism because they saw international politics as this grave competition. The 19th century was very important for establishing modern civlization, but we've certainly developed a sense of moral economy that was simply not present at the time.

Philippines. It was colonized by Spain for 300 years, America for 40 years and Japan for 3 years. The British and the Dutch had each one attempt but were repulsed by the Spanish armada. What are its influences on these people especially today.
12 :
Not because I am a Filipino but the Philippines can be an interesting study. Its culture has been influenced by Muslim, Chinese, Spanish and American cultures. In fact Filipinos themselves do not have a clear identity like Chinese, Japanese or Indians. For this reason, Filipinos easily blend with foreign cultures and avoid common cultural conflicts. There are still tribal minorities in remote areas of the Philippines but are slowly dying out because of modern and western influences.

I think the obvious answer is the Philippines. It is where the East meets the West, It is the fusion of Asian, American and European cultures. Good luck!

What are some good points regarding the speed of advancement between Europe and Asia?

What are some good points regarding the speed of advancement between Europe and Asia?
(and please no comments like "whites are better than yellows, etc") Serious introspective answers, please! Also, if Europe advanced quicker than Asia in the ancient times, does that have anything to do with why Asian children score higher on SATS in modern times?
Politics - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I don't think Europeans advanced quicker than Asians in any period of time prior to around 1900. For instance, they discovered gun powder long before Europeans, but used them as fireworks instead. In my opinion, much of European innovation was guided by the fact that there were so many various peoples. Most of civilized Asia was fairly homogeneous. They mostly looked the same and had fairly comparable cultures. The climate would only vary in remote mountainous areas. It would not be uncommon for Europeans to encounter another group of people with an entirely different set of values and culture. Not to mention that they may look completely different physically. Picture a Viking meeting a Spaniard for the first time. They would be polar opposites. Such events would lead to a natural rivalry and lead inevitably to war. Also, the history of Europe led to the possibility of large empires. Starting with the Greeks and then Romans, Europeans were accustomed to being part of a vast kingdom and swearing allegiance to a dictator. During such times of general peace, it was easy for societal progression. Without the threat of war, people were free to think and invent. These periods would inevitably be followed by a period of war, when a successor kingdom would eventually rule. These times would often lead to societal degeneration. The people who had been pioneering modern science and literature would be forced to literally run for their lives. In extreme times, their intellect might be seen as a threat to a ruler. They may even be put to death simply for being intelligent. During the same time in Asia, their "kingdoms" were generally much smaller. They would not allow their local hamlet to be ruled by a faraway dictator as the Europeans would and they would fight to defend it. This led to a constant state of stalemate with no local ruler able to conquer more than one or two of his neighbors before losing ground he had just gained. For this reason, most males had no choice but to fight for their village. With women busy caring for the home, nobody was left to advance the overall civilization. The technological and social breakthroughs that were accomplished were usually accidental. However, unlike the Europeans, these advancements would not be lost after their village was overrun. Instead, it would be spread throughout the land. So, perhaps the best way to visualize it would be to picture two pendulums. One is very large and heavy, Europe. The other small and light, Asia. The large pendulum would get great speed and force as it goes down, but when it reaches its zenith, it slows to a stop and gradually reverses course. It can cover a great distance at its fastest speed, but is brought to an abrupt halt by its own weight when it reaches the top. The small pendulum on the other hand quickly darts up and down, up and down. It never gains great momentum and certainly won't come close to the speed of the large pendulum. But, it never comes to a stop. The large pendulum is in a constant state of running, stopping, and catching up. The small one has constant steady slower motion. But in the end, they both cover the same distance. Basically, Europe's history is filled with examples of dramatic advancement followed by dramatic degeneration. Asia's history is filled with a slow steady progression. The reason why I say "prior to 1900" is that technological advancements are a different matter altogether. An invention like, say, a ship or plane is something that we can never regress from and will be immediately replicated. Also, an advancement like a rifle will immediately trump previous weapons. Those inventions combined would change the continent's roles significantly. Whew, that was a long answer. Hope it works...

How do you see the selection of Saurabh Tiwari in the squad for Asia Cup?
He had an excellent season in the IPL and is a very talented young player. Do you think it was a right choice to select Tiwari for an important tournament like Asia Cup or should he have been selected for the Zimbabwe tour? And Also - Do you agree with the selectors for not including Yuvraj in the side? Is this the best squad India could have got? If not, suggest changes.

Though I think preference should be given to Manish Pandey, but still its a good decision. He should already have picked for the Zimbabwe tour if the selectors wanted to test young players. Yuvraj's exclusion is a good decision. Just hope he gain his lost mojo in the meanwhile. But I am still not satisfied with Jadeja, Dinda and Ashwin's presence. They are nothing special.
2 :
its good decision
3 :
yes he's great

I am neither happy nor sad bcoz Manish Pandey,Pujara, Uthappa , or may be RP Singh would have been given a chance to prove themself. But i am happy to see atleast a one good youngster's selection.

i dont know!
6 :
For sure..Tiwari is a good choice and he should get a chance...UV should be out for some time,,it will be good for indian team and for him also :) :) :) :) :)
7 :
I am glad Yuvraj and Pathan are dropped. Sachin is a great player but india needs to learn to play without him. I don't know much about Tiwari but he others have been tested so why not to give a chance to a new young talent? I think this experiment will work in india's favor.
8 :
its a good move by the selectors. yuvi needs sum time to settle down. Atleast 1 player shud b there from ur state or else wats the point in being a selector. Ashwin is a good player. Tiwary is goin 4 a holiday trip. But he shud make use of this chance at the nets.
9 :
i think he has a lot of talent he also delivered his best in the 2010 IPL he is a up coming cricketer.
10 :
Decisions based on IPL have failed India so far, even Dhoni voiced his opinion re this but nothing wrong in blooding new talent, who has done well but problem with team India selection is-- whether or not poor guy gets to play, he might get thrown out, for no reason, policy should be like ACB, you either don't get in & if you are in, you get ample chances to prove your selection, either way. Yuvraj is Pawar's clone, he is too cocky, definitely a good player, out of form but his swagger tells us a lot about him, despite whatever he says about himself--- let him rest & recapture his form & fitness, Yusuf might have played his last game, his weakness against the fast bowlers is over-obvious, rest of the team is usual, couple of players here & there, they have to perform to their hype & be worthy of their remunerations, they get as team India players, going th. a lean patch, with T-20 debacle & joke of a team playing in Zim tri-series, lost India one ranking, which should teach BCCI a lesson or so, so this the best of the lot we have, let them prove themselves, good luck !! More than team India, its our-----public's fickleness, we are either over-joyed with one win over Australia or Pakistan & down the dumps after one loss, so we should learn to be more patient & let the team get back into the form, as core of the team remains unchanged, its their performances, which go up or down, once they are consistent enough then team India is strong enough, yet not naturally strongest in the world, so along with the players,we should also know the limits, this team India can perform up to.
11 :
Yes. Tiwari is a good choice. As far as Yuvraj's exclusion is concerned, you have already replied to my question. Yes. This is a "suitable" team for Asia cup.

Chinese parents no longer view sports as an active past time, it's now a chore to get their kids growing. Therefore swimming and particularly basketball became favourites. Football (soccer) seems not to be that popular in contrast to South Korea or Japan, we all know what's the reason behind that, right? China sucks at soccer, period. Although you must have seen China performance in the Olympic games, there are kids training vigorously to become professional athletes.

they don't look the same at all There's the Altaic Asian(Korean and Japanese) and then there's the Silotic(Chinese. They're very different in looks and culture
3 :
I think many folks would tell you that they see differences in the physical appearance of the three populations, suggesting that the groups are not the same. Indeed, it seems as though the three (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) do have different ancient ethnic roots, as follows: Japanese - descended from the Jomon (native to Japan) and Yayoi (which may include some Korean or Chinese blood) Chinese (Han) - descended from the Huaxia (from around the Hwang Ho/Yellow River) Korean - descended from Altaic-Siberians (similar to Turkic and Mongolian groups) It's not just lingo-political. And, needless to say, the groups see their own cultures as very distinct from one another.
4 :
Hans are probably the majority.

Korean and Japanese are Altaic from Middle Asia. Also, linguistically, Korean and Japanese have almost same grammar structure even though they have own characters. Besides, Chinese are totally different from them. eg: Korean, Japanese = Subject + Object + Verb, Chinese = Subject + Verb + Object. - Siberian, Manchurian, Mongolian, Korean, Japanese belong to the Altaic group. - Chinese, Tibetan, Thailander, Vietnamese, Myamese and other south east Asians belong to the same ethnic/linguistic group.

Where can I find out about the evolutionary history of the people of Asia?

Where can I find out about the evolutionary history of the people of Asia?
I am interested in finding out more about the evolutionary history of the people of Asia, mainly the people of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the people of the Philippines. What is the evolutionary history of these people? Do they share common ancestors? Why did they evolve to have the physical features they have? Etc. Any credible resources would be good.

Hi, I travel around South East Asia reguarly . I don't know if you have any particular places in mind that you want to go, but if you are interested in areas like Singapore, Malaysia, Phillipines, Thailiand, Indonesia, Macau etc..... check out the website of "Air Asia". They are owned by Malaysian Airlines, and seem to be very professional and safe. I have flown from Kuala Lumpar (Malaysia) to Singapore for US $3 + tax and K.L to Manila for $20 + tax. They also fly to Beijing and Shanghai. It's a budget airline, so you have to purchase food and drink onboard if you want them (no freebies), but the flights are short and the aircraft very good. I am not aware of Japan having budget airlines unfortunately, I know China does, but I recommend researching their safety history if you are considering booking a flight with them.

You can also try checking out another budget airline, Tiger Airways - you can get really cheap tickets, especially in the low seasons. That airline should get you around popular destinations around asia and they are pretty reliable as well. My family flew from Saigon to Singapore and return for around $100 inclusive of taxes (each person) about 3 months ago, and it would be even cheaper now.

Charges are in Singapore dollars (they are having a <$500 round trip from Sg to Tokyo now) http://www.airfares.com.sg/ www.jetstar.com prices start as low as $23 per one way from Singapore to Vietnam Ho Chi Minh.
